Department of Justice (DOJ) has launched a myriad of lawsuits against various police and fire departments across the states of Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, and Indiana that “discriminate” against black and female applicants after they required all prospective employees to take written as well as fitness tests.
Last week,
Durham, North Carolina settled with the DOJ in a lawsuit. “Employers should identify and eliminate practices that have a disparate impact based on race” US Attorney Sandra J. Hairston for the Middle District of North Carolina said. As a consequence, the Durham Fire Department is being forced to pay out nearly $1 million to people that failed and employ 16 of them.
