At Appomattox Courthouse, Lee showed up in his finest uniform while Grant showed up in a private's overcoat that was splattered with mud.
Eisenhower is a very interesting story. He never discharged a weapon in combat, was a Lt. Colonel when chosen by Marshall and the story just keeps getting better.
General Marshall, yep, another interesting story. He's the five star guy, that chose people like Eisenhower, but remained in DC during the whole of WWII.
Eisenhower was the right man, in the right place, at the right time. They needed a military man with loads of political savvy to cobble together a viable coalition of differing factions and interest to achieve victory. He was perfect. McArthur was perfect for the Pacific theater. He knew how to fight a war and knew exactly what to do with post war Japan. Kept to the total surrender of Japan, while quietly giving them back their dignity, pride and honor making them one of our best allies to date.
