This is the same thing that happens to cars up north, where the streets are salted when it snows.
A small scratch in the car's paint can become a rust bubble, as the salt gets under the paint, and starts to attack the steel body.
Over the winters, the rust bubble will become a rust spot.
A few more years, and the rust spot becomes a hole in the car's steel body.
A few more years and the rust spreads all over the car's body.

Oh yeah, salt water is highly corrosive. The only way to safeguard your car up here is to immediately address any scratches on the body and run your vehicle through a car wash during the winter.

Doesn't Florida get those enormous sinkholes from time to time?  Something about the land having been swampy in certain areas?  So eventually everything sinks really slowly until it gives way?

Not a lot of sinkhole activity where this building is/was. Most of the sinkholes are seen from Tampa north.
However with soft wet sands and swamps, they can happen anywhere down here.

So this disaster is likely 100% due to human error/corruption...how horrible.  :(

It looks that way to me, along with 40 year old building codes.

It can happen if you're in the wrong place at the wrong time.

While the media skirts this issue, here's a video you might find useful/helpful on understanding what 'may' have most likely happened.  I watched this last night.

At this point, sports fans, I think there is so much danger of that whole assembly falling on the rescue workers, it's just time to call it a day and implode the whole mess. I am not a mean lady, but the danger hanging over everybody is not worth the trouble considering the prospect of worse things happening and losing more people...
