Possible, but peeps would have seen signs of it for years prior. Also, parts would fall, but nothing on this scale. My gut says sink hole.Walt wrote: ↑Fri Jun 25, 2021 12:34 pm I read that a south Florida structural engineer who’s been doing inspection in south Florida buildings for 20 years, and he said it could have been caused by steel rebar having rusted, which can expand 7 times its mass, thus splitting the concrete into pieces, setting off the sequence. The building is right on the beach, exposed to salt air, salt water 24/7 for 40 years.
If the above proves to be the case -- what will that do to real estate prices for similar beach front concrete units? Maybe nothing. This could be an anomaly.

Perhaps a weakened older building and a sink hole...kind of a perfect storm type of thing? Guess we'll find out eventually.

Or possibly demolition. It does look a lot like the WTC when they collapsed in upon themselves.Canis wrote:Thu Jan 01, 1970 3:38 am Perhaps a weakened older building and a sink hole...kind of a perfect storm type of thing? Guess we'll find out eventually.

I think those first responders/diggers are fighting a losing battle. It may get to the point where it gets too dangerous, they have to stop and just let the thing fall down...

I was just listening to President Trump on Newsmax. He commented on the building collapse.
He said that what he has seen on TV of the rubble, to him, it appears that the overall design of the structure of the building was weak, in that the size of the columns and the floor thicknesses appear undersized for the size of the building.
An interesting observation from someone that knows a thing or two about buildings.

...The report also uncovered "abundant cracking and spalling" of concrete columns, beams and walls in the parking garage. Some of the damage was minor, while other columns had exposed and deteriorating rebar. It also noted that many of the building's previous attempts to fix the columns and other damage with epoxy were marred by poor workmanship and were failing....
Sounds like this building was a disaster waiting to happen.
Wonder how many of the other buildings over there are in the same shape??

This is scary stuff. Looks to me like there might have been some sort of corruption in the building inspector's office perhaps?flaokie wrote: ↑Sat Jun 26, 2021 1:19 pm ...The report also uncovered "abundant cracking and spalling" of concrete columns, beams and walls in the parking garage. Been reading up on this. Seems structural failure may be the main culprit. If i lived there and seen that stuff i would have gotten out as fast as my feets could carry me. My guess is, its set up for, in part, low income. The City/county share culpability due to the fact they knew this place could be dangerous but turned a blind eye to it instead of shutting the place down.flaokie wrote: ↑Sat Jun 26, 2021 1:19 pm ...The report also uncovered "abundant cracking and spalling" of concrete columns, beams and walls in the parking garage. Although rare in the US it does happen. This one (SF) is more recent:Canis wrote:Thu Jan 01, 1970 3:38 amThis is scary stuff.
