In an interview Yeager said he asked one of the flight engineers for the protocol of exiting the X-1 in case of an emergency. The engineer told him not to even try, as the doorway at that speed would cut him in half.

Yeager had a set of brass balls.
I think it was a day before the big flight he fell of a horse and cracked a couple of ribs, which would have had him replaced as the pilot, because he couldn't even close the plane's door.
He had his flight engineer cut up a broom handle and hide it in the cockpit.
He used the broom handle as a lever to close the door with his other arm, and went off to break the sound barrier.
