Perhaps the most telling snipet of all was Zelensky saying there would be elections if the war was won, but not if it was ongoing or he was losing. That is the voice of a dicitator not a lover of democracy. During the bloody and horrific war between the states, many of Lincoln's advisors urged him to suspend his reelection efforts because of the turmoil and the fact that the war wasn't going all that well, but Lincoln refused. He suspended a lot of the constitution, I believe illegally, but he knew that if the northern states didn't hold a free and fair election his power as President was doomed. The elections had to be held. That may have been the moment when Lincoln could have seized power, but he refused to destroy democracy in order to do so, regardless of the outcome.
