Forum Chat Announcement! - HOW TO CHANGE IF & WHERE THE CHAT WINDOW APPEARS

Post: # 1537Post UCAV »

Chat is coming to our site

Chat is a way to interact with members in a more spontaneous way than traditional posts. It should be a useful and fun feature during special events, such as debates and election night. It will be turned on during the next few days.

What to know before Chat arrives

Seeing Chat is completely voluntary, but when it arrives, it will, by default, appear as a large window at the bottom of your Main Page.  You can move it to the top if desired:

Select the drop list by your user name at the top right

Select User Control Panel

Select mChat tab. On this tab, index page refers to the Main Page. You can specify if you want it displayed on the page, and if yes, the location Top or Bottom.

You can also select where new chats should appear in the Chat window, top or bottom, if the Chat window is displayed.

Tip: Keeping the default, Chats at the Bottom may be more convenient because the text editor for new chats is located at the bottom. It is is easier to read and respond to a chat.

At this tab, you will also have the option to enable sound notification when a new chat arrives. Even if sound is enabled, you will not hear sound if the Chat window is not displayed on the Main Page. (The options, described below, will enable sound to be heard even if the Chat window is not displayed on the Main Page.)

Hit Submit button at the bottom

Additional options

You can still access the Chat window even if you choose to not display it on your Main Page.

Option 1

At the top of the Main page is a menu bar indicating Quick Links, FAQ, mChat. If you select mChat, you will bring up the Chat window by itself. To go back to the Main Page, on the menu bar indicating Main Page < mChat, click on Main Page. You can go back and forth.

If sound is enabled, it will be heard if the mChat page is displayed.

Exact locations of all of these buttons is "Style" specific, so you may have to look Top Left or Top Right to find these buttons.

Option 2

With the Main Page displayed without the Chat window, you can copy the browser URL and open up a separate browser tab or window. Paste the URL in that second tab or window.

Just as in Option 1, in the new browser tab or window, at the top of the Main page is a menu bar indicating Quick Links, FAQ, mChat. If you select mChat, you will bring up the Chat window by itself.

Now you will have the Main Page in one tab or window, and the Chat window in the other. Going back is as simple as navigating between browser tabs or windows.

As long as both tabs or windows are open, if sound is enabled, it will be heard.

-------------------------------------

One point - Sending a chat is similar to sending a text message. After it's sent, there is no editing, but you can create a duplicate chat.
