Cardinals as 'messengers from heaven': What does it mean when you see this beautiful red bird?

I get a male and female cardinal in or near my front yard.  They make these cute little chirping sounds.
They seemed to have showed up right after my neighbor next door hung himself.  He was going though a divorce. :|
