As I recall, Bill Gates got his start when his mother, an attorney for IBM, learned about a situation with the developer of DOS. She arranged for herself and Bill to buy the rights of DOS for a song.

Mostly right. Gates was supposed to meet the guy at his mother's place but he went golfing instead and his mother negotiated the deal. His name is just on two brain cells, but I still cannot remember it. He was one of those lofty geniuses that wondered around in a daze.
Back sometime in the 1970's after buying an Osborne-I PC I found that it had a CP/M compiler and wrote a lot of neat programs for it. It was a great little PC, but had little or no storage capacity. Then I found a guy that sold IBM style PC's and had my first real PC. Wow, that was a few years ago!

Those were the days. Prior to my first XT clone, I played around with HP programmable calculators. My first one was an HP-45. An early fun task was using a pseudo-random number generator to calculate pi - Generating random points on a 1 by 1 square and determining if the point fell inside a quarter circle. Prior to that I had an IBM mainframe to myself. The university stopped using it prior to the lease expiring it, so it was my toy for a while.dustymars wrote: ↑Tue Jan 05, 2021 7:53 am Mostly right.
