All this according to CDC guidelines? The CDC is full of morons, imbeciles, and twits.
"Food stored in the refrigerator is safe for consumption after a power outage for up to four hours..."
What is it, 125° day with the fridge in full direct sunlight? As long as you are careful, know in advance what you want and only open the fridge for a few seconds (open, grab, close - no "shopping") you food should be fine for 24+ hours, even on a hot day. When the power is out due to COLD weather, your milk, eggs, even meat will last a couple days or longer, depending on how cold your house gets. Good grief, I've left milk out on the table overnight, and still drank it. Good restaurants allow most meats to sit out and warm a bit before cooking to make it easier to cook through evenly.
Freezer, again, decide FIRST, then: open, grab, close. A FULL freezer will keep things still frozen solid for 36-48 hours. Things might start getting soft around the edges after that, again depending on temperature inside the house. But the more open air inside, the faster items inside the freezer will start thawing.
Speaking of freezers, we need a bigger one. 13 cu ft. does not really hold a whole lot. 2-2.5 months worth of various meat for a family of 3.
