The site has encountered many hacking attempts including fake accounts, probably for the purpose of spamming. Almost all of these attempts come from outside the US. Because all users I know of are based in the US, I have blocked access from outside the US as another barrier to the unwanted accesses.
If a US user happened to use a proxy from outside the US, that proxy would be blocked.
Please advise by PM or responding to the thread if there are any issues with this blocking.
