Whether it pays or not depends on many factors, including the size of the system, the average amount of sunshine, the costs obviously, and the net metering arrangement with the power company.

"...He came into my living room, sat on my sofa, and he told me lie after lie after lie to get me to buy their system. And I fell for it. I did. I fell for it.
I was told that I would never have an electric bill again...."
It pays to know a scam before putting out the cash.
Don't you think you would see almost every house on the planet with these eye sore panels on their roofs if it did away with electric bills??
Didn't it sound just a little "too good to be true" to you??

Many years ago I helped a couple coworkers design a "get rich scheme" with solar water heating and also some solar electric gadgets as well. First, the initial costs for replacing their 40-gallon water heater with a 250-gallon heater, then the roof panels and copper tubing from the hot water heater to the roof and then to the 1,500-gallon, granite lined holding tank in their back yard -- we decided the installation costs could never be repaid by the savings in hot water power costs.
Back then, the 1980’s, solar electric was so new the initial costs were all over the place, but it was very costly to say the least. Solar panels were very expensive then and then the AC inverters for the scale of power usage would add even more expenses. Recovering the initial costs would take centuries, as the solar hot water scheme would have. We just don’t live long enough to recover installation costs.
