I learned to drive in a WWII Army Jeep and got my license at 15 years old. My first hot rod was a 1934 Ford 3-window couple with a 1947 or 48 Cadillac flathead engine, 4 carbs. I traded it for a 1940 Ford Standard Couple and installed a 1956 Chevy engine that was just right to run loads from west Tennessee to east Tennessee. Then a 1934 Ford Custom 2-door with a 1957 Chevy engine. I loved dirt and grease, so I worked as a mechanic at a local dirt track. At times I dove it around the track and asked the owner to teach me to race. He laughed and told me he would not wish that on his worst enemy. I took his advice and gave that up early.

I grew up on the farm. Dad taught me how to drive the pick ups when I was 13. I had already been driving cars at 12. Anyhoo...we had an old 1939 International PU and a 1950 Chevy PU with a wooden box on the back (which I had to use as a manure spreader... ) We didn't have a tractor but the neighbor did so I drove that and loaded hay.
All the trucks had dead batteries so we had to roll them down a hill and pop the clutch to start them....The dog loved to go with me.....
Those were the days...
